Projects

The Publish and Thrive (P&T) programme was conceptualised by Professor Russell Kaschula and Andre Mostert in 2007. The model supports senior students in developing their academic careers as they complete their advanced degrees through development of research projects.  This leads to the expansion of publications which earn subsidies for the African Studies Section at the School of Languages at Rhodes University.
The programme has resulted in a number of students completing their studies and enhancing their research skills. In terms of research output there has been a marked increase in the number of publications, including international journal articles that have been published. The next phase of the project is to develop a robust on-line platform that can support other departments and universities that feel they could benefit from embracing the model.

“South Africa faces a language crisis!

Many of our students and young lecturers are additional language speakers of English which creates language problems for them at postgraduate level where all theses and papers are written in English. Andre Mostert, through Cogito, established the Publish and Thrive programme with me to try and address issues of editing and style. This model encourages students to submit work on-line where it is edited by a team before returning it to the student or article writer for finalisation. Publish and Thrive indeed fills a gap in a country where cognition is present amongst writers in the Mother Tongue, yet English language skills are lacking in articulating the final product. This model has been a great help indeed.”
